Faculty of Medical SciencesPurbanchal University (PU), under its Faculty of Medical Sciences (FOMS), is preparing to launch Nepal’s first M.Sc. program in Biostatistics. An interaction program was held today in Biratnagar to discuss the proposed curriculum, attended by 52 participants from various sectors. The program was chaired by Dr. Shailesh Mani Pokharel, Dean of the FOMS, and inaugurated by Registrar of PU Prof. Dr. Kalyani Mishra Tripathi, who thanked the experts and emphasized that the curriculum should meet both national and international academic standards. Dean Pokharel highlighted that the university has conducted a thorough needs assessment and labor market analysis and is now finalizing the curriculum.
Presentations on the curriculum were delivered by Nabin Lamichhane (HoD, Department of Public Health, PU), Associate Professor Dharanidhar Baral, Director Dipty Subba, and Deputy Dean Dr. Shyam Kumar Mallik. Experts from Nepal and abroad, along with interested students and stakeholders, actively participated. Distinguished attendees included Dr. Naveen Vaidya (San Diego State University), Dr. Pramesh Subedi (Ohio University), former NHRC Chair Prof. Dr. Gehanath Baral, NHRC Member Dr. Lili Rajbanshi, Prof. Dr. Archana Shrestha (HOD, Department of Public Health, KU), Prof. Dr. Amod Paudel (HOD, Central Department of Public Health TU), and Prof. Dr. Shivendra Jha (Dean, BPKIHS).
The event was attended by subject committee chairpersons Dr. Kadir Alam, Prof. Dr. Anup Ghimire, and Kamal Parajuli; Executive Directors of PU—Dr. Medini Prasad Sharma (Curriculum Research and Development Center), Prof. Dr. Minraj Dhakal (Research Center), Dr. Komal Prasad Dulal (Planning Division), and Dr. Uttam Kumar Regmi (Monitoring and Evaluation Division); Prof. Dr. Shiva Kumar Rai, member of the University Grants Commission; Menuka Bhandari, Campus Chief of Tribhuvan University Nursing Campus, Biratnagar; as well as faculty members from Birat, Nobel Medical College, and Manmohan Technical University. All invited experts and participants provided constructive feedback, emphasizing the importance and relevance of initiating the M.Sc. Biostatistics program. The program concluded with a commitment to incorporate the suggestions and launch the program soon. Dean Pokharel thanked all participants, appreciating their valuable comments.
